Advanced Camp, Session 3: July 24th-29th, 2017

July 24 @ 8:00 am - July 29 @ 5:00 pm

$475

Girls Rock Austin’s Advanced Camp is a day camp for girls, genderfluid/non-binary and trans youth ages 14 to 17. Qualified instructors provide more in depth instruction to campers on guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, or vocals. Open to campers who have attended camp at least twice, or to those who have had more in depth music instruction. Camp is divided between music instruction, band practice, and workshops designed to cultivate discussions about our experiences with the world, as well as delve further into musical skills. The camp week ends on Saturday with a public showcase where the youth perform their songs.

CAMPERS ATTEND WORKSHOPS EACH DAY. WORKSHOP EXAMPLES INCLUDE:

  • Songwriting and Music Theory
  • Women Who Rock
  • Every Rose Has it’s STEM: Science, Tech, Engineering, Mathematics in Music
  • Healthy Relationships/Communication Skills
  • Self-Care and Stress Management
  • DJ skills
  • Sound Engineering
  • Band Art
  • Gender and Identity
  • Music Video

Girls Rock Austin is much more than an arts education summer camp — it is an educational and social justice organization. We believe that creativity, positivity, and community are key elements of personal and collective empowerment and positive social change. A significant portion of the week is dedicated to workshops where campers can have facilitated discussions about topics affecting their daily lives, such as media literacy and body image. Dedicating time and safe spaces for these discussions increases campers’ sense of support and reiterates the importance of creative expression. Additionally, they get to learn more advanced and in-depth facets of the independent music creation process including songwriting, audio and video recording, and music gear repair.

Alumnae and their parents report that the unique experience “changed their lives,” and after camp they try new things, creatively, academically, and socially. Participants are more confident and expressive, have better teamwork and collaboration skills, and are better prepared to navigate life’s challenges. Many girls come away from camp with adult mentors and peer bonds that continue after camp.
