Girls Rock Austin, Session 1: June 5th-June 17th, 2017

June 5, 2017 @ 9:00 am - June 10, 2017 @ 5:00 pm

Girls Rock Austin is a day camp for girls, genderfluid/non-binary and trans youth ages 8 to 17. Qualified instructors teach campers guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, or vocals. No musical experience is required. Campers then form bands and write original songs. Camp is divided between music instruction/band practice, and workshops designed to cultivate discussions about our experiences with the world, as well as delve further into musical skills. The camp week ends on Saturday with a public showcase where the youth perform their songs.

Girls Rock Austin is much more than an arts education summer camp — it is an educational and social justice organization. We believe that creativity, positivity, and community are key elements of personal and collective empowerment and positive social change. A significant portion of the week is dedicated to workshops where campers can have facilitated discussions about topics affecting their daily lives, such as media literacy and body image. Dedicating time and safe spaces for these discussions increases campers’ sense of support and reiterates the importance of creative expression. Additionally, they get to learn more in-depth facets of the independent music creation process in songwriting, screen printing, recording, and history of women in music workshops.

Alumnae and their parents report that the unique experience “changed their lives,” and after camp they try new things, creatively, academically, and socially. Participants are more confident and expressive, have better teamwork and collaboration skills, and are better prepared to navigate life’s challenges. Many girls come away from camp with adult mentors and peer bonds that continue after camp.

Check out our YouTube channel to see videos of campers in action.
